Carpet Care

Put undiluted soda water directly on the stain and blot up with a clean white towel until most of the moisture has been removed. To remove what is remaining, put a fresh white towel down on the top of the moisture and place a heavy object on the top to remove “the last drop”.

Act Promptly: The older the stain the more difficult it is to remove. Absorb liquid with clean, white towel or paper towels and scrap up solid material. Work from the outside of the spot toward the center to avoid spreading it.

Test Solutions First: On a portion of the fiber or carpet that is not normally visible.

Blot Gently Between Steps: NEVER RUB! Rubbing or aggressive blotting can cause a stain to spread or penetrate deeper. A clean white towel or paper towel allows you to see when you are no longer absorbing the spot or stain.

Never Use Bleach: Bleach can remove a lot of stains, unfortunately it will also remove the colors from your carpet.

Be Patient: Repeat the procedure several times until no more residue shows on your towel.

Natural Tricks

Products:

An all-purpose cleaner; especially effective on glass coffee pots and glassware; removes red-wine stains from carpeting. A paste (made with water) can shine stainless steel and silver; the paste can also remove tea stains from cups and saucers. Make a paste with a castile- or vegetable-based liquid soap and a drop of essential oil (tea tree or lavender) to clean sinks, countertops, toilets and tubs. Pour 1 cup down the sink to clear a clogged drain, followed by 3 cups of boiling water.

Use weekly to flush drains and avoid clogs.

Cleans copper pans and scours cookware. Sprinkle salt on fresh spills in the oven, then wipe off. Sprinkle salt on rust stains and squeeze a lime or lemon over them, let sit for several hours and wipe off.

Mix lavender or tea tree essential oils with water and spray on kitchen or bathroom surfaces for an environmentally and people-friendly antibacterial spray.

Add a few drops to water in a spray bottle for an odorless way to kill mold and mildew.

Use as a bleaching agent on clothing, and to remove grease from your stove and countertops. Add 2 Tbsp lemon juice to 10 drops of (real) lemon oil and a few drops of jojoba oil to clean and polish wood furniture.

Use to lubricate and polish wood furniture (three parts olive oil to one part vinegar; or two parts olive oil with one part lemon juice).

Halved potatoes can remove rust from baking pans or tinware – follow with a salt scrub or dip the potato in salt before scrubbing.

Can be added to vinegar/water solutions for its antibacterial properties. Use it to kill mold and mildew, and on kitchen and bathroom surfaces instead of chemical products. Add 50 drops to a bucket of water to clean countertops and tile floors.

Cleans silver; can remove water stains on wood furniture – dab on, allow it to dry and wipe off.

Cleans linoleum floors and glass (from windows to shower doors) when mixed with water and a little liquid soap (castile or vegetable). Cuts grease and removes stains; removes soap scum and cleans toilets (add a bit of baking soda if you like). Pour down drains once a week for antibacterial cleaning. Add to water in a spray bottle to kill mold and mildew.

Racipes:

Add 125 ml (1/2 C) vinegar to 1 L (4 C) water. Tip: When you spray this on your windows, use old newspapers to wipe it off.

All-purpose: Add enough vinegar to equal parts of salt and flour to make a paste. Rinse with warm water.
Copper: Sprinkle with salt and scrub with half a lemon.
Silver: Combine 15 ml (3 T) each of salt and water softener, and a piece of aluminum foil in a bucket filled with hot water. Place silver pieces into the water making sure that it is touching the aluminum foil. Rinse in cold water. Works like magic!
Chrome: Sprinkle white flour on a dry rag and polish until shiny.

Mix 60 ml (1/4 C) vinegar, 125 ml (1/2 C) baking soda and 4 L (16 C) water together.

Dissolve 5 ml (1 t) lemon juice in 250 ml (1 C) vegetable oil and apply with a clean rag.

Liberally sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on carpet. Leave for one hour. Vacuum. For tough stains blot with cold soda water or vinegar.

Dissolve 5 ml (1 t) of baking soda in 500 ml (2 C) of hot water. Add 5 ml (1 t) lemon juice. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and use as an air freshener.

Add 15 ml (1 T) vinegar to the washing.

Other Cleaning Tips

For regularly scheduled cleanings, vacuum using the furniture attachment. A rechargeable hand held vacuum can help maintain in between cleanings. In a pinch, use rubber gloves or a damp cloth; pet hair will cling to both.

Rub a small amount of glycerin on the mirror.

Think in terms of left to right, top to bottom. Avoid going back and forth around a room, instead work using a systematic approach. Dust or lean top surfaces first, moving downward as you progress.
